The Discovery Call That Pays Itself Back
How twenty focused minutes saves both sides weeks of avoidable rework.
Every project I have ever regretted started with a vague kickoff. Every project I am proud of started with a tight, structured discovery call.
I keep mine to twenty minutes and ask only four questions. What outcome would make this project worth the money? What does success look like in ninety days? Who is the person we are designing for, in one sentence? What have you tried that did not work?
Those four answers tell me whether to take the project, what to charge, and where the real risk lives. They also tell the client that I take their goals seriously, which sets the tone for everything that follows.
If you freelance, this is the highest leverage habit you can build. Twenty minutes of clarity saves twenty hours of rework.
